That doesn't matter at that point it may have not been blacklisted. Same thing could happen at Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. Carriers can't see the future of when someone isn't going to pay or not. If the device was blacklisted before you tried activating it the system would say so. Even Gazelle probably didn't know and it's a risk buying used devices.
