I currently have a line on an AT&T Family Plan and am looking to switch providers. I rarely ever text or call, and only occasionally use the web each month (<500MB) to check Google maps and Facebook. I lost my AT&T phone recently and thought that switching to a Pay as You Go Prepaid phone might be best for me.
I looked online (see link below) and can see that there are phones you can purchase and that there are no annual contracts associated with them. Are these phones the ones that you can buy X number of minutes/days of activation for? I do not want the ones that have a no annual contract, but you pay each month.

Additionally, can I purchase a phone elsewhere and then make it into a prepaid phone like I am looking for? What I would really like to do is purchase a phone that I like, port my number from AT&T into it, and have it as a prepaid minute phone. I use my phone so little that it doesn't really make sense for me to pay a monthly fee.
